United Nations 2030 Agenda
West Africa Network of Election Observers mission is to help strengthen, empower and support democratic institutions and promote the democratic values enshrined in the African Charter on Democracy, Election and Governance as entrenched in the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda, which re-affirms that, there can be no sustainable development without peace, nor peace without sustainable development; acknowledging the importance of democracy as a precondition for economic and social development for humanity in West Africa and Beyond.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) recognize that, respect for human rights and the rule of law, good governance, peace and security are crucial for sustainable development, all of which are at the core of the United Nations operational and humanitarian mission in West Africa and around the World.
While Goal 16 creates a visible frame to contribute to strengthening of democracy in West Africa and Beyond ,and its elements of peace, justice and inclusive societies are highly central and prerequisite to the operational mandate of WANEO, meanwhile, other Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are also of prime importance to the work and operations of WANEO , including SDG 5 and SDG 17 of the UN 2030 Agenda.
Goal 5 of the SDGs which sets out to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls, particularly its sub-target 5.5 ensuring women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of democratic governance processes and in high decision making process in political, economic and public life within the West Africa Region.
Goal 17 of the UN SDGs on strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing the global partnership for sustainable development, particularly through the sub-target on strengthening multi-stakeholder partnerships with broad geographical active participation from new and old democracies of West Africa and the active involvement of diverse stakeholders, in particular, civil society, West Africa Network of Election Observers(WANEO), as a key stakeholder in the West African civic space has a workable and ambitious strategy and blueprint that facilitates a multi-stakeholder and cross-sectoral approach necessary to help move forward the UN 2030 Agenda and preserve its integrity for democratic consolidation and sustainability in the West Africa Region.
West Africa Network of Election Observers is currently developing a set of supplemental democratic indicators that aim to facilitate the better measurement of critical aspects of peaceful, just, inclusive and democratic societies, supporting the comprehensive achievement of Goal 16 of the UN SDGs in West African democracies for the betterment of the people of West Africa.
